"Fuel up with
Five" is a monthly nutrition education game for K-6 children. The program
integrates classroom learning activities with cafeteria food experiences
and parent information. The program begins in November and culminates during
March's National Nutrition Month with a statewide "Race for Health."
Age/grade appropriate education materials are available here (see left) and in hard copy for participating schools. Campaign materials are shipped monthly to participating schools. Classroom materials include a checker board "score" card for each child to follow their progress in eating all five components of the school meal; activity materials for each month's lesson; nutrition related incentives for children who successfully "win" each month's mini race to good eating. Cafeteria materials include posters and food information cards promoting the "food of the month" from the Jersey Fresh program. The food service department is also provided with recipes and serving tips for the special Jersey produce of the month. Parent materials include camera ready copy for newsletters or "send-home" handouts to alert the parent to each month's education focus, to provide them with nutrient information and recipes on each month's Jersey Fresh produce, and to encourage them to also plan meals using the "Fuel up with Five" concepts. The program is free to participating schools
and is under written by the NJ Team Nutrition Project. |
